Here’s what was happening in Canyon Lake over the past 40 years in the month of October.

In October 1975, the big news in town was that four boats in Canyon Lake had burned, causing hospitalization for boaters and extensive loss of property. the Lighthouse Magazine featured a lengthy story dealing with safety rules for those on the lake.

A new leash law was brought to the attention of residents after an incident at the Campground involving a couple of large dogs.

The Woman’s Club was gearing up for its annual “Wheelin’ and Dealin’ Swap Meet.”

Dee Dee and Myron Davis spoke up in the Lighthouse Magazine to express their hope that some sort of shade for horses at the Equestrian Center might be in the works, along with more trees everywhere in the gated community.

It was reported that more than 100 were in attendance at the September service of Canyon Lake Community Church held at “the old POA Building across from the mailboxes near the Main Gate.”

A new Golf Course home on a corner lot was advertised for $49,500 with views of both the 3rd and 4th holes.

Several Canyon Lake water skiers were among medalists at the Western Regional competition, including Bob Barton, Randy Gibson, Thelma Salmas, Barbara Canfield, Dr. Mick Francis and Jack Hanna.

The Roadrunners had a successful camping experience at Crazy Horse Campsite near Lake Havasu, which included a visit to the London Bridge site.

It was reported that the neighboring Quail Valley Fire Department answered calls for 21 fires, seven rescues and three other emergencies the previous month.

In October 1980, a “Waterfront Development of Deluxe Townhomes” was advertised for Continental Cove by North Hills Realty.

The issue of street rules and the prohibition of motorcycles within Canyon Lake were major concerns following a legal appeal, and the POA was to consider possible changes in the existing rules.

Repairs to the Golf Course were under way following damage from flooding, while volunteers continued to work towards improving the amenities and features of the private gated community.

A new 6-ft. x 6-ft. TV screen was installed in the Lodge Lounge, and Monday Night Football was a fall feature.

The Home Owners Club was informed that the security force would be happy to put a special watch on homes of residents who would be away for any lengthy period of time. There was also a warning that thieves were stealing POA plastic gate cards from parked cars left outside homes and then selling them to others to gain admission to the community.

The Jr. Women’s Club announced the cancellation of the Miss Canyon Lake contest due to the lack of contestants.

The Canyon Lake Sailing Club held an open sabot race with awards.

Due to reassignment of personnel, the annual March Air Force Concert was reduced in length, much to the disappointment of those expecting a longer musical program.

More than 1,400 spectators were in attendance to view the Canyon Lake Ski Show.

The Toastmasters Club was seeking additional members, and LuVerne Alrick was scheduled to be the speaker at the monthly luncheon of the Woman’s Club with her talk about “Signs of the Zodiac.”

A Golf Course lot could be purchased for $23,900, and a three-bedroom, two-bath home with open beam ceilings was on the market for $76,000.

A new drainage system was installed at the Salt Creek crossing into East Bay, with five times the capacity of the previous culvert.

30 Years Ago

In October 1985, Barbara King was the president of the Jr. Women’s Club and was busy with her members in planning for the group’s year-end activities.

Riverside County Supervisor Norton Younglove met with POA officials regarding a new tract of homes tentatively approved for the area outside the North Gate that might require ingress and egress to Canyon Lake’s private streets.

The POA Board unanimously approved the construction of a new ACC/Security Center at the Main Gate.

The Gandy Dancer Restaurant offered early dining specials. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held by the Tennis Club for their newly constructed restroom facilities.

The Travel Club planned excursions to Mazatlan and the Playa Resort Hotel and also to a closer destination on Catalina Island. The Anglers, various Scout groups and the Jr. Women joined forces to host a “Pumpkin Decorating Contest” and party at the Lodge.

A waterfront lot on Big Bass Cove was advertised “with a fantastic view of the Main Lake” at $117,500, while a “custom home with three bedrooms and one and three-quarters baths on Outrigger” could be purchased at only $105,000.

Don Martin, an early resident prior to Canyon Lake’s establishment, was the speaker for a meeting at the Lodge Fireside Room as he discussed the history of the growing community.

Artistic women within Canyon Lake joined to host a “Holiday House” boutique at a local residence to offer decorations and gifts for the upcoming holidays.

25 Years Ago

In October 1990, Railroad Canyon Rd. was still under construction to add lanes, with the completion date set by Lake Elsinore to be November 1990. The discovery of Kangaroo Rats and other delays had plagued the widening project for months.

The Architectural Control Committee (ACC) reported that Canyon Lake was 79.5 percent built with 3,569 total residences. Of those, 2,519 were owner–occupied. 387 leased and 89 rented on a month-to-month basis. There were 253 weekenders, 51 spec homes and 1,012 vacant lots.

Cityhood proponents were discussing plans to deal with the adjacent BLM land in the unsupervised area.

The possible need for a private school within the gated community was proposed by a resident, and “Russ-Cards” were made available for property owners living in the Fairway Estates. POA Board members were eagerly awaiting completion of renovation of the Lodge for an anticipated November 2 “Grand Re-Opening.”

With incorporation of Canyon Lake on the November ballot, the Christensen and Wallace feasibility study was under review by residents.

Bob Stong and members of the Home Owners Club Beautification Committee installed sprinklers at Diamond Point Park.

It was announced that The Community News and The Friday Flyer would merge as a weekly publication, starting in November.

Residents of Appaloosa Court became more aware of the advance of civilization as the first Tuscany Hills homes were completed.

20 Years Ago

In October 1995, Canyon Lakers were looking forward to the production of “Guys and Dolls” as the Community Theatre took over Indian Beach for this popular musical production featuring an “All Kids Cast.”

Paving of the trench along Railroad Canyon and Goetz Roads, and the placement of a Salt Creek crossing pipe was under way by the Eastern Municipal Water District.

Canyon Lake was 83 percent built with 3,799 residences. Of those, 2,728 were owner-occupied, 516 leased and 39 rented on a month-to-month basis. There were 404 weekend homes, 112 spec homes and vacant lots numbered 957. There were also 21 homes under construction.

Magicians from the “Magic Castle” were to perform at Elinor’s Restaurant at the Lodge, along with a buffet dinner for $15. The Holiday Harbor Park site was nearing completion as POA vice-president John Zaitz reported to the community.

The Emergency Preparedness Committee conducted a disaster drill that mimicked an earthquake and involved a large number of local residents.

Rhoni Barton was one of Canyon Lake’s water skiers who won medals at the Western Regional Championships.

Members of the Youth Action Council joined POA staff in painting the new Youth Center in the Towne Center.

The POA closed the Country Club and was said to be looking into a proposed lease-option plan to reopen it in the near future.

The City approved the purchase of a defibrillator for use by Fire Co. 60.

The Bosom Buddies breast cancer support group continued to offer discount mammograms for women who were uninsured or short of the cash necessary to pay for the life-saving tests.

A three-bedroom home on Cove View with 85 feet on the water was offered for $259,000, and a lot on Emperor could be purchased for $29,000.

The Jr. Women’s Club and Chamber of Commerce joined in co-sponsoring a Parade of Frights of costumed kids for pre-Halloween fun.

Proponents of “Measure H” on the November ballot asked that voters pay attention to the need to complete school construction and maintain quality education in local schools. It was estimated that passage of the measure would cost the average homeowner 37 cents a month, and this was equated to the “same amount paid for a single gallon of gas at the gas station!”

Shelby Horgan was a highly ranked CIF Southern Section cross-country runner from Temescal Canyon High School, and Canyon Lake’s Jennifer Kutzke was student body president of that school.

In October 2000, “Annie Get Your Gun” was the fall production of the local theater group, with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, Annie Oakley and Chief Sitting Bull among those on the Indian Beach stage.

Candidates for City Council included Gene Bourbonnais, Frank Kessler, Jack Wamsley, Jesse Washington and John Zaitz.

A traffic signal was approved by the County for installation at Highway 74 and Greenwald.

The 10th Annual Canyon Lake Classic 10K Run was scheduled for October 15 under the sponsorship of the Home Owners Club with a course beginning and ending at the Lodge.

“Max” the border collie employed by the POA to harass the community’s pesky bird population, was honored in a national publication.

It was revealed that all schools in the Lake Elsinore Unified School District surpassed the state academic growth targets. Canyon Lake’s Allison Lopez was crowned TCHS Homecoming Queen.

Columnist Dan Bernstein was the featured speaker for the Canyon Lake Friends of the Library group.

The community was eagerly awaiting the long-anticipated opening of the new Canyon Lake Lodge on November 1.

In October 2005, Fire Station 60 was accepting applications for those who wanted to work as volunteer firefighters alongside paid firefighters. The POA Board of Directors sent a letter to the City of Canyon Lake requesting that the CLPD step up its enforcement of the laws prohibiting drinking while driving on the community’s private streets.

Local schools and various community groups were taking collections and holding fundraisers for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Residents Ryan and Laura Clark shared photos from their trip to, and subsequent evacuation from, New Orleans prior to Katrina’s arrival, when thousands of tourists and residents were forced to flee the city in droves.

Codie and Kylie Medlin Labeda won gold medals in their respective age groups in the “State Wars” roller hockey tournament in Illinois.

Pro Wakeboarder Melissa Marquardt traveled to Australia to compete in Gravity Games and the wakeboarding world championship.

World traveler Norma Horrocks was planning to take her West Africa trip, “From Here to Timbuktu.” It was one of several trips she took to the continent of Africa.

Eight women from the Canyon Lake Curves joined several women from the Menifee Curves to attend a taping of the Dr. Phil Show.

Remnants of Hurricane Max caused an all-night thunderstorm in Canyon Lake, bringing 5,000 lightning strikes to local communities between midnight and 6 a.m. One of them hit a 40-ft. tall palm tree on Appaloosa Ct. and “burned like a torch,” according to Bob Miller, who lived on the street.

Canyon Lakers were invited to participate in the inaugural “Wine and Cheese Tile Painting Party” at Southpaw Ceramics. The tiles were to be placed on the permanent tile wall at the Tennis Courts.

Dwayne Fuhrman of Bartoli Fuhrman Investments announced grading was complete and the initial structural work for phase 1 had begun on the enclosed storage units at Summerwood Landing, a large boat and RV storage facility off Loch Lomond Dr.

The first weekend in October 2010 was a busy one for active Canyon Lakers: the Car Club’s Car Show and Cruise on Saturday at the Lodge, the Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast at Holiday Harbor Sunday morning and the Home Owners Club Oktoberfest at Indian Beach Sunday afternoon.

City Planner Paul Rull presented a proposal to the City Council’s Planning Committee regarding an application from Quiel Bros. Signs seeking to replace the existing pylon sign located outside of Pepe’s Restaurant with a new multi-tenant pylon sign for the Towne Center.

City Manager Lori Moss thanked residents and all who attended the Mayor’s State of the City and 20th Anniversary Event at the Lodge. Supervisor Jeff Stone and representatives of Assemblyman Brian Nestande, Senator Bill Emmerson and Congressman Darrell Issa were on hand to offer proclamations of congratulations to Mayor Nancy Horton and the City of Canyon Lake at that event.

Dianna Wallace reported seeing a four-foot rattlesnake on her Fairway Estates patio. The City began selling memorial bricks and raising money for a new Veterans Memorial to be unveiled on 11-11-11.

Canyon Fitness Center celebrated a grand re-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony after a complete makeover following a fire and water damage that destroyed the west wing of the building in November 2008. .

Canyon Lake City Councilman and Pepe’s owner Marty Gibson was a “poster boy” at the Lake Elsinore Relay for Life at Canyon Lake Middle School. Battling cancer, Marty was too ill to attend; but his wife, Jeanne, honored him at the event.

Residents were treated to a Marine Band Concert at Indian Beach, thanks to the Fine Arts Guild and the Home Owners Club.

Meet the Candidates Forums were held for City Council candidates Richard Beck, Randy Bonner, Mary Craton and John Zaitz. The POA announced that the Road Project on Vacation Dr. and Canyon Lake Dr. South was just about finished. The Lighthouse Bar & Grill began offering a limited breakfast menu all day Sunday.

Once again, the Canyon Lake Chair Volleyball Teams won the gold at the Inland Empire Senior Games Competition, held at the Sun City Civic Association facility. The Senior Committee held a giant yard sale at the Senior Center.

Brent Miller entered the hospital to have his stem cells harvested in hopes of saving the life of a woman with leukemia.  Brent had added his name to “Be A Match” with the National Bone Marrow Registry and received a call that he was almost a perfect match for a 66-year-old woman who would not live much longer without the regenerative stem cells.

Autumn weather conspired to put residents in the mood for chili, making the Jr. Women’s Club Chili Cook-off at Holiday Harbor a big success. The annual Parade of Frights was held in the Towne Center.

A cocktail party was held at the Lodge to give golfers and other residents a chance to express their appreciation to the former Golf Pro and his staff: Dave Lindeman, Jerry Hefferon and Sean McClosky.

Southwest Communities Animal Center, operated by Animal Friends of the Valleys, held a grand opening ceremony.

In October 2014, the Canyon Lake Police Department hosted “Coffee with a Cop” at Jimmy’s Café in the Towne Center, as officers from the Canyon Lake Police Department came together with residents in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships and drink coffee.

Block captains were sought for the newly formed Neighborhood Watch Program.

Candidate Forums were held for City Council candidates Randy Bonner, Dawn Haggerty, Vicki Warren and John Zaits.

Blasting and rough grading began in Pardee’s land development site next to Railroad Canyon Rd. in Canyon Hills.

On one Saturday last October, the Jr. Women’s Club hosted Rocktoberfest at Holiday Harbor, followed by Octoberfest in the Towne Center hosted by the Sports Stop and Chamber of Commerce.

The Lions and Lioness Clubs held their annual Western Hoedown at the Country Club. Cotillion held its Masked Ball at the Lodge.

A new Halloween event was introduced when the Family Matters Club held a Halloween Party and Movie Night at Sierra Park. The Farmers Market hosted the annual Pet Parade and Costume Contest. The Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual Parade of Frights in the Towne Center.

Several young people from Canyon Martial Arts in the Towne Center, coached by Steve Harriman, participated in the Great Pumpkin Tournament at Centennial High School in Corona.

CLPD officers responded to an injury traffic collision involving two vehicles in the 22000 block Canyon Lake Dr. South. The collision caused a road closure at Canyon Lake Dr. South and Early Round Dr. for approximately two hours.
